Here are 6 TIPS TO HELP YOUR CHILD LEARN ENGLISH

1. Play games in English - games like hide and seek,
I spy, snakes and ladders are all games you can play in English with your son or daughter.

Even simple things like always counting in English when you are playing any game that involves using a dice and moving around a board will incorporate more English into your day to day life.

2.Read bedtime stories in English. At the moment there are a
lot of theories about learning a language while you sleep. Now that is not what we’re suggesting, however, reading bedtime stories in English is really useful for your child. You can get books with audio if you aren’t confident in your English yet or use text-to-speech on your device.

Give yourself the challenge of listening to a story a few times and then reading it yourself to your child. We have some recommendations for books to read in English here:

3.Leave the radio on in the background at home in English​
so the house is filled with the sounds of English.

Being exposed to a language and learning a language are two different things. Being exposed to a language replicates the mother tongue experience of young children who hear a lot of language before they start speaking.

Listening to the sounds of a language, the intonation and the stress can vastly improve pronunciation.

4.Sing songs together in English. You can choose between traditional English children’s songs and modern pop music.

If you choose modern pop music remember that some music is not appropriate in language for children.

5. Watch cartoons in English together whenever you get the
opportunity. Netflix or internet offer the possibility to watch cartoons and films in the original language so make the most of those opportunities.

6. Start learning English yourself. This creates a positive
atmosphere at home towards language learning. If you are studying English as well it shows your son or daughter how important you think this language is. There are plenty of resources online to help you improve your English and some language schools, like ours, offer discounts for parents who sign their children up for courses and do English courses themselves.​
